SSG Owen was a Psychological Operations tactical team chief (MOS 37F3P) assigned to Bravo Company, 9th PSYOP Battalion, 4th PSYOP Group (Airborne). Mike previously served in Headquarters Support Company, 9th PSYOP BN(A), in its motor-pool section before attending the Psychological Operations Qualification Course at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, NC.
While conducting a mission with the 1st Marine Division in Karabilah, Iraq, on 15 OCT 2004, his tactical PSYOP team’s vehicle was struck with an enemy vehicle-borne explosive device, mortally wounding SSG Owen, the TPT assistance team chief CPL Santos, the Iraqi interpreter and severely wounding the PSYOP specialist, who would be the only survivor from the attack.
Mike was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
The SSG Michael G. Owen Maintenance Facility, utilized by the special operations soldiers of Fort Liberty, NC, is named in his honor.
