Killed In Action: 03 FEB 2010 – Operation Enduring Freedom – Pakistan
SSG Stets was a Psychological Operations Sergeant (MOS: 37F3P) assigned to Alpha Company, 8th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne).
On 03 FEB 2010, SSG Stets and his team were with other elements of U.S. Army Special Operations near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, attending the ceremony of the re-opening of a girl’s school in Timargara, Lower Dir district, North West Frontier Province, Pakistan that had been rebuilt with the ARSOF team’s assistance. The vehicle Mark was located in, was struck by an enemy suicide bomber, mortally wounding him and two other U.S. Army special operators, SFC Matthew S. Sluss-Tiller and SFC David T. Hartman, from the Civil Affairs Regiment.
Mark was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals.
His name is inscribed on the USASOC Memorial Wall before the United States Army Special Operations Command MG Robert A. McClure Headquarters building.
The J.F.K Special Warfare Center and the School’s NCO Academy award the Staff Sergeant Mark A. Stets Jr. Leadership Award in his memory.
