1LT Martin was a PSYOP Officer (MOS 9305) assigned to the 244th Psychological Operations Company (modern-day 344th PO), a subordinate unit of the 6th PSYOP BN during the Vietnam War. On 8 OCT 1967, 1LT Martin and a detachment of seven soldiers from the 8th Radio Research Field Station, Army Security Agency, left Phu Bai Army Airfield on a C-130B (SN 61-2649) for Da Nang under monsoon conditions. 15 miles southeast of Phu Bai, the aircraft crashed into Dong Nhut Mountain. All 23 service members on board were killed upon impact. The cause of the crash is indeterminate, but it is suspected visibility conditions were a factor.
Members of E CO, 2 BN, 26th Marines were able to recover all lost servicemen on 10 OCT 1967, after inserting under the cover of darkness at the crash location, 150 feet below the 1850 summit of the jungle mountain.
