1LT Johnson was a Special Forces Qualified Psychological Warfare Officer (MOS 39305) assigned to ODA-105, Charlie Company, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Roger enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and later graduated from Army Officer Candidate School in May 1967. He fought in the Battle of Kham Duc shortly after he arrived in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Bronze Star.
On 28 SEP 1968, while conducting a patrol with ODA-105 somewhere in the mountains to the west of Da Nang and north of Firebase Nông Sơn, Roger was mortally wounded by Viet Cong sniper fire around 11:00 AM local time and succumbed to his wounds in a field hospital a few hours later.
He was posthumously awarded a second Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medal.
His name is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., at Panel W42, Line 36.
