SP4 Sills was a Still Photographic Specialist (MOS 84B20) assigned to the 246th PSYOP Company, 6th PSYOP BN. SP4 Sills had served in the U.S. Navy before the U.S. Army. On 13 OCT 1966, Darel was assisting in a MEDCAP with the 173rd Airborne Brigade as part of Operation Robin in the village of Phouc Mai, Quang Tri Province. Upon completing the MEDCAP SP4, Sills got on a jeep with Civil Affairs officers 1LT James Edwards Gardner and 1LT Emery George Mikula, officers from 2d Civil Affairs Company attached to the 173rd Airborne. En route to Cam Lo, the jeep struck a Viet Cong emplaced mine. All three servicemen would be killed in the explosion.
Darel would posthumously be awarded the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
His name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. at Panel 11E, Line 72.
